Smart meter news welcomed by consumer group

Independent consumer champions Consumer Focus has welcomed the decision to increase the amount of smart meters in homes.

Zoe McLeod, energy expert for Consumer Focus, suggested that the meters would lead to the end of estimated bills.

"It is good news that standalone displays will be provided with smart meters," she said.

"This is key to helping customers identify how they can reduce energy use and save money."

However, she added that she was "concerned" that consumers "don’t write a blank cheque to fund smart-meter roll out".

Consumer Focus is now urging the government to put consumer protection measures in place soon, for the many people who already utilise the technology.

Retirees who are struggling with their bills may find that an equity release scheme can help them with extra funding. Smart meter news welcomed by consumer group
