Pensions guru Dr Ros Altmann has urged the government to review the age at which people need to retire.
A leading industry commentator has said that proposals to review the default retirement age are "long overdue".
Dr Ros Altmann, an independent pensions adviser, said that current policy "works against" giving people the option of remaining employed for longer.
The comments come after women and equality minister Harriet Harman told the Daily Mail that the government is planning to re-evaluate the existing retirement age.
She explained that there is no reason for people to give up work at the age of 65 as reaching the milestone is no reflection of their abilities.
Dr Altmann welcomed news of the review and said: "Employers should be encouraged to facilitate longer working lives in their workforce.
"Nobody needs to force people to stay on but equally if people want to, it shouldn’t be right for an employer to just be able to get rid of them because of their age."
There are several reasons why people choose to work beyond the age of 65, including supplementing their income. However, this can be done in other ways such as equity release, through which homeowners can release money by mortgaging their properties.
