Price comparison website uSwitch.com has warned that annual energy bills could cost almost £5,000 per year by the end of the decade.
The organisation has warned that current price trends and an increased amount to investment in renewable energy will see prices rocket over the next ten years.
This warning follows the publication of a forecast from energy regulator Ofgem, which predicted prices are set to rise by 25 per cent to around £1,549.
However, uSwitch has said these figures "underestimate" the impact additional investment will have on energy consumers.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at the website, said: "The £5,000 a year energy bill may seem like an outside possibility, but we have to remember that energy bills doubled in the last five years alone and that the huge investment needed to keep the lights on in Britain will alone add £548 a year onto our bills."
Rising energy prices are a particular worry for elderly people who dedicate a larger proportion of their income on household heating.
Those who own their own property could now seek to relieve some of the value of their assets, through schemes such as equity release, in order to meet the growing costs.
