Representative organisations of grandparents are attending a cross-government summit today (November 12th) to explore the changing role of grandparents in society.
High on the agenda will be discussing how employment can be combined with care of grandchildren and how families and childcare services can adapt to more effectively meet the needs of grandparents.
Findings from the summit will be used to advise the Families and Relationships Green Paper, which will look at ways in which the government can provide better support for families.
Work and pensions secretary Yvette Cooper said that grandparents are helpful to families struggling to meet the demands of work and home life.
"Thousands of grandparents across the country are playing a vital role in all our lives and we want to do all we can to help support them, which is why today’s event is so valuable," she commented.
Earlier this week, financial services firm Prundential advised Britons to start saving for their retirement earlier in their career.
According to the firm, an increasing number of people are working past retirement age in order to fund their future.
Older people and those approaching retirement may wish to consider other options like equity release.
