A list of tips has been published in order to help UK households stay warm during power cuts.
Price comparison website uSwitch.com said the advice has been published after many people were left without power during the recent "big freeze".
The firma advised those who are cut off from their energy supplier to ensure torches and candles are kept in easy to reach locations and to gather the family into one room in order to stay warm.
Other tips included filling hot water bottles and storing hot drinks in thermal flasks if there is still a way to boil water.
Emma Bush, energy expert at uSwitch.com, said: "With this winter expected to be the coldest in 30 years[1] and more snowfall predicted to be on the way, consumers should be as prepared as possible for any further power cuts.
"Energy companies will always try to get the supply back up and running again as quickly as possible, but in severe weather such as snow this can take time."
Power cuts are a particular worry for elderly people who can be more affected by the cold weather.
Many may look to install duel energy services to minimise the risk of a total power cut.
Retirement funding policies such as equity release schemes can help to pay for such alterations by allowing homeowners to access money which is tied up in their property assets.
