Increase in pensioner travel plans

January 25, 2010

The number of people aged over 65 who are requesting winter sports cover on their holiday insurance has increased by 20 per cent over the last 12 months, according to a new report.

A study published by Age Concern and Help the Aged has revealed that pensioners are travelling further abroad and planning repeat trips.

The number of people aged between 65 and 74 taking out multi-trip policies has increased by 16 per cent year-on-year, according to the report.

Those aged between 75 and 87 are also looking to take a number of trips with a 40 per cent increase in the number of worldwide policies taken out last year.

Joe Young from Age Concern Insurance Services, said, "Globe-trotting is no longer the reserve of the young.

"Over 65s are as likely to be travelling the world as younger generations as they search for ways to bring excitement to retirement."

Pensioners looking into making holiday plans but struggling to come up with the funds could turn to funding schemes such as equity release to realise their dreams.

Such policies allow property owners to access money which may be tied up in the value of their homes.
