Lib Dems: Tories are confused and unfair on pensioners

March 29, 2010

As the race to the general election intensifies in the wake of the recent Budget, the Liberal Democrats have accused the Conservative Party of being confused and unfair in its treatment of pensioners’ finances.

It follows a speech by David Cameron in which he stated that under a Conservative government the value of basic state pensions will be increased and income will be linked to earnings.

The party also vowed to freeze council tax for two years and increase the 40 per cent inheritance tax threshold to £1 million.

However, the Lib Dems have called for more details on the proposals, saying: "The Conservative’s offer to pensioners is confused and unfair.

"They expect millions of older people to work longer to help the public finances yet they refuse to say when they will restore the link between increases in the state pension and average earnings."

Concerns about uncertainty in the pensions arena could encourage a number of people to enquire about schemes such as equity release.

These policies allow homeowners to receive a cash injection with funds taken from the value of their property.
