More needs to be done to help retirees, survey suggests

The majority of the British public believe that the government is not doing enough to help people in retirement.

This is the finding of a new survey by Club Vita, which revealed that seven out of ten people think that more needs to be done to help older people.

A further three-quarters want to see a "substantial increase" in the basic state pension, which would act as an improved income stream for people thinking of taking out an equity release mortgage.

Chief executive of Club Vita Nick Flint said that it shouldn’t necessarily be the case that living longer should come at a price.

"We may not be living quite as long as some of those surveyed think – it’s actually around a five to six-year increase in typical lifespan from one generation to the next – but our increasing longevity will effect profound changes in our attitudes to work and subsequent retirement," he commented.

Last month, the government called on businesses and individuals to submit evidence of the default retirement age.
