New services at the Post Office will be beneficial to retired people in rural communities.
That is according to local services company The Ryedale Group, which has welcomed plans by the government for the Post Office to offer a range of finance services.
Zoe Hemmingfield, spokesperson for The Ryedale Group, said: "It’s bringing the Post Office into the next century a little bit more. It’s taken a lot longer than it should.
"It is more important [however] for people like the older generation who are retired and perhaps don’t have transport to collect their pension, [and need] a savings account they can access."
Earlier this week, Lord Mandelson suggested that the Post Office was a "great institution".
Many older people may find such services useful, particularly those who are in need of regular cash.
Those who need a boost to their finances could consider equity release schemes as a way of freeing up some money to enjoy the finer things in life.
