Research highlights change in opinion on older workers

The idea of retirement is outdated and thoughts about it are likely to change it has been suggested.

Rachel Krys, the campaign director of the Employers Forum on Age, said that the rapidly ageing population is forcing a change in tack.

Her comments come as research from Lancaster University Management School discovered that customer satisfaction in McDonald’s outlets was higher if they employed staff over the age of 60.

Ms Krys said: "We believe that we are on the verge of a major shake-up in the way we manage people as the population ages.

"Many people make a good contribution at work and only short-sighted organisations would risk removing talented people just because a milestone birthday is approaching."

The study by Lancaster University suggested that over two thirds of the managers at the McDonald’s restaurants believed customer satisfaction was higher as older workers connected better with patrons.

Nearly half of managers said that they delivered better customer service as they went "the extra mile".
