Standard Life welcomes government review

People aged over 45 are more ambitious for the "third stage" of their lives than any generation before them, according to a new report.

A study of baby boomer attitudes toward retirement by pension provider Standard Life discovered that the over 45s have bigger aspirations for work than ever before.

The figures came as the government announced a fast track review of the UK’s retirement age.

Changes to the regulations could now see people working on into their 70s and 80s.

The move has been welcomed by Standard Life which said 40 per cent of people aged over 45 want to continue to work.

John Lawson, head of pensions policy at Standard Life said: "The fast-track review … is very welcome news for the millions of people facing retirement, not because they want too, but because current legislation effectively forces them too."

However, Mr Lawson explained that retirement remains "a far off dream" for many people struggling with their finances.

Growing fears over retirement funding could result in more people turning to equity release plans, in order to boost their income.

Such schemes allow homeowners to supplement their pension with cash drawn from the value of their assets.
