Two more pension schemes join PPF

January 15, 2010

A statement from the Pension Protection Fund (PPF) has revealed that two more schemes were signed to the programme during December 2009.

Gilbraith Tankers Limited Pension Scheme and Champion Pension Scheme have now joined, taking the total number of PPF transfers to 109.

According to the PPF: "A further 1,181 people around the UK are now receiving compensation – or will do so in the future."

This means the total number of potential compensation claimers now stands at 32,889.

Recent figures revealed that the PPF paid out around £10 million in compensation between 1 December and 31 December 2009.

The announcement follows news from Aon Consulting that the UK’s largest defined benefit schemes now have a funding shortfall in excess of £100 billion.

Fears over the fragile state of the UK pensions market could see many people look into additional retirement funding policies like equity release.

Such schemes allow property owners to boost their pension income with money drawn against the value of their assets.
