Price cuts made by the major energy suppliers over recent weeks are disappointing, it has been claimed.
Consumer advice service uSwitch.com has voiced its concerns as despite the cuts, energy prices are still "far higher" than they were two years ago.
The organisation also showed disappointment that all of the new tariffs, except one from British Gas, will not come into effect until next month, leaving customers with higher bills while the weather is still cold.
Figures from a uSwitch report have revealed that prices increased by an average of 42 per cent in 2008, while the recent reductions have seen prices fall by as little as four per cent.
The figures could cause particular concern for older people who use more of their income to heat their homes.
Those who have invested in their property could realise the potential of their assets through a scheme such as equity release.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said: "Even taking into account cuts this year, household energy bills have ended up around £280 higher than two years ago putting even more emphasis on the need for consumers to start managing their energy costs."
