uSwitch: Millions face energy price hikes

February 17, 2010

A number of fixed-price energy deals are set to come to an end leaving millions of UK households facing increased energy bills, one price comparison service has claimed.

Figures from a recent report by uSwitch.com have revealed that six price guarantee plans are due to close soon and could leave the 4.6 million households on "fixed of capped" energy tariffs facing price hikes of up to £258.

Thomas Lyon, energy expert at uSwitch.com, said: "Many of the households about to lose the protection of a fixed price energy plan are coming back onto a market that will look very different from a few years ago.

"Prices are on average £497 or 68 per cent higher than in 2006 and this will come as a shock to many. With energy prices so high consumers face an important decision and we would urge them to take the time to shop around."

The rising cost of energy bills could be of particular concern to elderly people who traditionally use a larger proportion of their income on heating.

Those who own their own property could now be tempted to use some of the value of their home to meet the rising demand through a retirement income scheme such as equity release.
