Over-65s looking for history and natural beauty for retirement living

Growing numbers of British retirees are shunning traditional seaside locations and instead opting to spend their Golden Years in more upmarket towns and cities, it has been revealed.

While destinations such as Eastbourne and Bouremouth have long been associated with the over-65s, new research has pointed to a "grey influx" from the big cities into smaller, more picturesque towns and villages, the Guardian reports.

As such, the Cotswolds and villages in Hampshire or Kent are now among the most popular retirement locations for the over-65s, with many taking advantage of equity release schemes to downsize into a more desirable destination, with a sense of history and natural beauty top of the list of priorities.

"People want to spend more of their retirement in the country, in areas of attractive scenery," explained Richard Webber, visiting professor of geography at University College London, who worked alongside Experian in carrying out the study.

"And they are choosing to live a long way from London and other major population centres."

This comes soon after the Equity Release Solicitors’ Alliance (ERSA) reported that it has seen a marked increase in the popularity of equity release schemes among UK pensioners.ADNFCR-2572-ID-19285969-ADNFCR
